Public Domain Art

Howard Pyle & Louis Rhead

Pirate and Treasure Island illustrations by Howard Pyle (1853–1911) and Louis Rhead (1857–1926). All are public domain in the United States as pre-1931 publications.

Louis Rhead illustrated the 1915 edition of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island — the primary visual inspiration for this project's aesthetic. Rhead's bold woodcut-style engravings of Hispaniola, Long John Silver, and the treasure map anchor the site's nautical-pirate look.

Howard Pyle's Book of Pirates (1921) provides additional swashbuckling scene art. Both artists' work is sourced from scans at Project Gutenberg and Wikimedia Commons, converted to WebP atquality: 85.
